Choosing the right base for a timber pond is one of the most important steps in ensuring it performs properly and lasts long-term. A solid, level foundation helps support the weight of the water and keeps the structure stable over time. Why the Base Matters A filled pond is extremely heavy, so the base needs to be strong enough to support both the water and the structure and the finished ground needs to be free from sharp objects that could puncture the liner. If the base is uneven or unstable, it can lead to movement, stress on the frame, and long-term issues. Best Base Options for Timber Ponds Concrete Base A concrete base is one of the most reliable options. It provides a solid, level surface and is ideal for long-term installations, even this may need a thin layer of sand on top just within the timber structure that holds the liner. Paving Slabs Well-laid paving slabs can also work effectively, provided they are level and properly supported underneath, again we would recommend adding a thin layer of sand once you have built the timber pond sides onto the slabs just in case there are any sharp edges present. Decking Timber decking can be suitable if it is structurally strong and designed to support significant weight, care should be taken though as if the liner slips between decking board gaps that could puncture it, we would recommend adding something to the deck where the pond is going to fill the gaps between boards.
